Loving/Lichtenstein Family

This is the Loving/Lichtenstein family. I have stayed with them this last month in finishing up the old house and taking care of my loose ends.

These are awesome folks. One day, upon getting kicked out of a residence, I had no place to stay or store my stuff. I saw Lisa Loving at the radio station and asked if they had room to store my stuff. I told her what happened. I talked with her later, and she told me, "You can stay with us." Just like that! What an awesome family.

Another time, I was looking for a place to stay and asked Lisa if she knew of a room to rent somewhere. Her answer: "You can stay with us, assuming that the room is for you, of course."

Staying with this family is awesome, wonderful, and at times, quite hilarious!

James Lichtenstein

James is 16. He Loves fish, snakes, and things like that there.

Recently, while rifling the freezer, James was almost hit by an "Attack Haggis."

Lisa Loving

Lisa...is married to a clown. No, really, she is.

She is a long time KBOO volunteer and one time PM news director. She is a wonderful mother and one of the kindest and most compassionate folks I know. She is also extremely intelligent.

Lisa, too, is a survivor of an attempted attack by a Haggis.

David "Leapin' Louie" Lichtenstein

David...Is a Clown. I have had the honor of watching this man perform as well as practice. There is something quite amazing in the talent of juggling.

As far as I know, David has never been attacked by a Haggis.

Leila Lichtenstein

Leila is very talented. She is an excellent artist and extremely intelligent. When I lived her previously, she used to pound out several different rhythms with her body.

Although she has seen the "Attack Haggis," it has never tried to get her.

Jawahar

Jawahar looks like, but is not, an "Attack Haggis." He is actually a cute cuddly cat raping giant teddy bear hamster. Big dogs will often cross to the other side of the street when they see him thinking, "Holy Shit! That is the BIGGEST teddy bear hamster I have ever seen!" ...or, "Is that an 'Attack Haggis?'"

U.S. Plan to Attack Iranian Nuclear Facilities

Shusli turned me on to some articles on Life After The Oil Crash.

One deals with King Dick's visit to Saudi Arabia recently. It is suggested via the evidence that Saudi Arabia is preparing for a nuclear fallout threat that King Dick may have told the Saudi's that he and co-King George are gonna start their illegal and genocidal war against the Iranians by knocking out their nuclear facilities. Hold on to your hats. The sickest thing about this whole GENOCIDAL (using the UN Convention definition) potential attack on Iran is that these fascist fucks will live long and healthy lives and like war criminal and genocidal maniac Ronald Reagan, die with HIGHLY UNDESERVED honors. Of course if King Dick and co-King George don't get their illegal genocidal war, you can count on John or Hillary to start it up. Barack, if elected, I have some doubt that he would follow in their footsteps, but the U.S. government wants genocide, and when they U.S. government wants genocide, they will stop at nothing to get genocide.

KBOO Folks

As my time draws near an end for my KBOO adventure, I decided to get down to the station and take photos of the folks who do a couple of my favorite shows.

"Radio Free Ireland" has been a fave of mine since the beginning and Maire, Shusli, Donovan and I have all become good friends.

"Incursion Rock" has been a favorite show of mine. They play Spanish speaking rock, especially heavy metal. I don't understand the words all that well, but I do understand the passion. I never had much of a chance to get to know these folks as well as I would have liked to, but they put on one awesome show every week.

I also ran into a few long time friends there, like Reggae Bob, Brian, Kathleen, Ani, etc.

I'll miss KBOO, but more than that, I look forward to the adventurous turn my life is taking with my wonderful wife, Shusli. We've talked about making this change for over a year now, and are diving into it and it is looking like we made a good landing and have a good future planned. I Love Shusli so much. We are re-entering our homeland. We are going home together.

It is nice to know, however, that KBOO will continue on without me. It is nice to leave the ashes of my show for you, YES YOU, to become like a Phoenix and rise up.

Shusli and I will be rising from our own ashes left in the city of Portland and become our own Phoenix's to do the things we need to do. Though our lives have changed, we will still be REVOLUTIONARIES!

Kathleen is one of the cornerstones of KBOO. She is the AM News Director. My favorite story to tell of her is when I was single and had no internet access, I would come down to KBOO at about 5:45AM to use the computers to most often find Kathleen already at work. I'd drop by after my work at around 5:00 in the afternoon to find Kathleen still there. This was pretty much the daily pattern for a little over a year.

Ani Haines, Everybody! Ani Haines!

Ani Haines, if not a cornerstone, a pillar of KBOO. She is the Volunteer Coordinator and usually works 12-16 hour days 7 days a week during pledge drive...I am not kidding nor exaggerating. We've been friends all these years. Her and Theresa are the awesomest.

Brian is a Border Scots who lives on the coast. He is also quite the flemenco guitarist, which I thought was funny for a Border Scots to be, but he is really quite good. He and Maire have been friends for years.

Andrew has been the host of "People Rise Up," an extremely informative program. I found out today that he, too, will stop doing his show as his work is getting in the way. He works at KBOO, however, so he won't get far.

We all had a great time in Coos Bay this weekend. We drove to the Klamath River in California, hung out at the beaches of Coos Bay, jaunted through the Redwoods, ate onions, and laughed so hard that I had a coughing fit and literally came close to passing out.

I wanted to post this one with the salmon post earlier. Sometimes it takes days before Youtube will post on my blog now. This, of course, is the 2002 Klamath River fish kill, one of the reasons that there are so few salmon now.

The Last "Mitakuye Oyasin"

After informing the program director at KBOO of my leaving the show, "Mitakuye Oyasin," I was informed that the show will then have to be cancelled. This opened up a big issue with me knowing that Native programming has been cut by 40% since I've been at KBOO, there is no more National Native News, and Indian programming is often pre-empted especially during pledge drive. Shusli was willing to give up time, energy, and finances, in order for me to come up every other week to insure that Indians stay on the air. It had been made clear to me that KBOO can put whatever the heck they want in that time slot and if they want, they don't have to put in native programming. This being made clear to me is what gave me the panic, but after some internet discussions with the program director, chances are, in two weeks after the last "Mitakuye Oyasin," you'll hear a different Native program by David Liberty. This is not a guarantee, however.

For 12 years I've been asking, often begging, for folks to come down and help out with Native programming. I've received such a minimal amount of interest. There have been six folks who have helped out with "Mitakuye Oyasin" over those 12 years, and I want to thank them. Jim Craven who was a co-host for a while, David Liberty another co-host, Leigh Anne Kranz who got us announcements, Warren Robinson the now missing co-host, Shusli Baseler-Johnson, and now Adam White Stone. Thank you all.

Now this is what I have been thinking now having a nominal guarantee that Indian programming will still be on the air. Having done this for so many years, I am now offering the gift of an opening for others to join in. After years of bothering the Native American Youth Association, they are actually interested now that I'm leaving in getting some of their folks on the air. You see, for me to come down, it took FEAR of losing the time slot for Indians to something else. Shortly after I joined, Indians lost one of their two time slots when "Indian World" and "Mitakuye Oyasin" were combined. We have since never regained that time slot and Indians for the most part at least with "Mitakuye Oyasin" are not interested in keeping that time slot open. Now that I'm leaving KBOO, if you Indians are not worried about losing more air time and having less representation of any kind, you now have a tiny opening and you can make that tiny opening much bigger and maybe regain that hour a week we no longer have and then some. But that is up to you. My only responsibility in all of this is to create room for you to join in.

And it has been a fun and fantastic run. We've called out the cops, we've harassed the FBI and the governor of Washington, we've discussed armed struggle, we've compared indigenous issues here with indigenous issues around the world and have on occasion given voice to those indigenous communities. We've played music you will never hear anywhere else and some of which you will probably never hear again at the closing of this show. We've discussed racism so much so that many times folks would call up and tell me, "You're making me feel uncomfortable," to which I would ask, "what about the comfort of others?" We've talked about the Israeli's torpedoeing the USS Liberty in '67. We've talked about war. We've talked about subjects that make most worried. And now, it is up to you to create more, and you can get David Liberty's help if you want it. He is a good mentor.

So, on March 27, 2008 from 1:30 to 3:00pm, will be my (Eugene Johnson) last "Mitakuye Oyasin," and in fact, THE LAST "Mitakuye Oyasin." My voice may occasionally be on the air in the future, but more importantly, you will have room for YOUR voice to be on the airwaves.

It has been a good run, and I thank you all for your participation and help. I am greatful to have had the opportunity to cheer you all on in your activism. I am greatful to have had the opportunity to teach you things. I am greatful to have been here at the BOO for 12 years. Now it is time to move on. I will be getting my CNA and working my way into nursing school down in Coos Bay. If you ever get down there, look Shusli and I up. We'll be around. We'll still be doing our part. We still have a Revolution to work on. We still have our parts to play in the bigger picture. And we will see you all there.

The Last Native Nations I Participated In and a Sad Note

Last night was the last "Native Nations" television program I have participated in.

The show will continue via David Liberty and Adam White Stone.

Of course, which is not unusual for this program, our guests were unable to make it. "N8V" had two members with the flu, but they may come down for the May show.

Next month David is trying to get Chief Johnny Jackson, Chief Wilbur Slokish, and Carol Logan to talk about grave desecration at the hands of ODOT in the Welches area of Highway 26.

I don't feel all that sad, really. It has been a nice run. I asked again that agents of the U.S. government turn coat and become whistle blowers. I am going to miss folks and the audience, but you all will be in the good Hands of David and Adam.

On a sad note, I received an e-mail this morning stating that not only will next Thursday be the last "Mitakuye Oyasin" I participate in, it will be the last "Mitakuye Oyasin." Should the programming director choose to and the programming committee support him, he could eradicate this program and put in elevator music should he choose. That would mean another reduction in Indian programming on KBOO. With John Talley's health being an issue and should he no longer be able to make it down, ALL NATIVE PROGRAMMING COULD BE ERADICATED FROM KBOO! I had no idea until I got the e-mail this morning that such was the case. I didn't mean for that to happen. It breaks my heart. It was not my intention. I apologize.

Salmon Fishery Cancellation

Salmon runs along the coast of the Western United States have become so decimated that the fisheries are being closed. The Pacific Fishery Management Council met Friday in Sacremento and are planning on cancelling commercial fishing from Tillamook, Oregon to the border of Mexico.

One of the first things I worry about is the racism against Indians that comes with such news. Back in the '60's and '70's along the Columbia and in other fisheries in the Northwest we had ourselves what were called the "Fishing Wars." White anglers and cops and supporters were often attacking Indians saying that Indians were responsible for the decimation of the salmon runs on the Columbia and in other areas. Turns out the Columbia run depletions were caused by two things: dams and the flouride put into the water by the aluminum smelters.

And, a couple of years ago, with the meager and LATE runs on the Columbia, the news crews were out interviewing anglers who, of course, were blaming the Indians.

The other day, a co-worker informed me that he and a friend of his that is an angler were having a discussion about the depleted salmon runs. The racist fuck immediately blamed the Indians in which my co-worker corrected him.

You see, folks, before the Euros invaded our lands, we had estimated runs along the Chewana (Columbia) of 16,000,000. Now we are lucking if we get over 80,000. This year, the runs are coming late, and it looks like it may be the worst year ever.

There is, of course, the dams. The dams on the Klamath were responsible for one of the biggest fish kills known just a few years ago. Was it Indians operating the dams? No. In fact, the Indians are trying to get Scottish Power to take the dams out.

Then there were the aluminum smelters and the flouride they were releasing into the water was screwing up the radar of the salmon. There are pretty much no aluminum smelters left in Oregon and Washington as the wealthy have sold out or moved their smelters to areas where they can exploit cheap labor.

There is also global warming whose effects on salmon runs is unkown and difficult to study.

Industrial trawling, dead zones, MILITARY DUMPING WASTES SUCH AS MUSTARD GAS in the oceans, etc. Oddly, none of these things are caused by INDIANS. These things are caused by an industrialized empire who believes that the only life with meaning is human, and some of those humans are easily defined by others as not being human.

So, blaming Indians for the depleted fish runs is not only racist, but an easy way to not to have to deal with the fact that this industrialized nation is actually responsible for the slaughter of the salmon. This, of course, would mean that the anglers have some sort of responsibility in their nations actions and may actually have to do something about it. But why do something about it when it is so much easier to be racist and let the shit continue just as it is.

Keith: McCain Confuses Shiites (Iran) and Sunnis (al-Qaeda)

Genocidal John McCain mistakenly states that Iran is training Al Qaeda and sending them back to Iraq. For those of you who don't know, John McCain had the #1 hit "Bomb Iran" (sung to "Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys). His good buddy, Genocidal Joe Leiberman had to correct him so he didn't look like the complete fucking genocidal war mongering criminal that he actually is.

Jerry Falwell vs. Jeremiah Wright

I watched the whole Barack speech, and it was good. I'm sure he had that ready for when something like this happened. Although I harbor no belief that Barack will bring any real change, I do truly believe that of the big 3, he will be the least genocidal.

That said, check the comments of Falwell compared to Wright. Falwell of course blames gays and lesbians and the ACLU for the bringing down of the two towers, Wright states, and rightly so, that it is the chickens coming home to roost. Wright has a way of telling the truth that the majority of white folks just feel UNCOMFORTABLE about. Awww. It's not like they're getting tied to a post and whipped or hanged from a tree for lies. It seems to be the truth that these folks fear. The truth and actually having to do something about it.

Barack did well in his speech. He was a politician through the whole thing. But these issues can't just be pushed aside. They have to be dealt with and head on for a change instead of the main issue being the comfort level of white folks who have never suffered such horrors as they have dealt the world. Don't give me your white guilt bullshit, do something about the world condition, white bread America...FOR REAL!

Wright Was Right

Barak Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, made statements that the U.S. is still racist and that the taking out of the two towers was brought on by U.S. foreign policy. Barak, of course, is worried about the political hay this will make within his campaign. If you read the article from the Associated Press, the author explains that this is just the rhetoric of an old style pastor raised in the '60's during the civil rights movement.

What I loathe about this type of shit is that everyone is too chickenshit to pick up the ball and run with it.

You see, America can't be racist anymore, they don't have black only water fountains. Calling blacks "niggers" is a thing of the past (unless you have a group of usually white males together discussing race or certain blacks referring to each other). Leaving blacks accused of whatever hanging and roasting in the town square is a thing of the past as well.

Let's bring up the boarding school issue here to add some clarity to this subject. The reason the United States Government no longer KIDNAPS Indian children and forces them into boarding schools to have the "red nigger" beat out of them, is that they U.S. has molded indigenous peoples into an ineffectual group that cannot stop it's illegal occupations of our lands nor the continued genocide of our peoples. They have "designed" leaders within the group to "play by the rules of the kings," and these are the only "red nigger" types they will work with.

Just because the U.S. has allegedly ended its apartheid against blacks and you no longer see angry mobs hanging black folks in the town squares and having picnics beneath their dead bodies is because the black power movement has been made ineffectual by the U.S. government through programs like COINTELPRO and the folks that they work with that are black are the ones who work WITHIN THE SYSTEM. Those who have a reason to take up arms and fight back don't, made ineffectual via television, poverty, ignorance, surrender to the system, self-medication, etc.

"The Revolution will not be [happening]."

Wright...is right.

Racism is alive and well and it has taken on an insideous form that is commonly accepted by U.S. citizens. Barak, or ESPECIALLY those racist campaigners within the Hillary/Ferraro camp, could pick up this ball and bring a greater understanding of the issue of race and racism to this nation, but such a thing would never happen because that is NOT the way the system is designed and the next king or queen will have to play along with the system. That is why Barak will distance himself from Wright, that is why the Hillary camp will continue its racist methods to attack Barak, all without calling him "nigger," of course.

Don't think racism is alive and well? Ask my honey, Shusli, how she gets treated for being a light skinned Indian.

What I HATE about this type of shit is that it is ALWAYS brought to the COMFORT level of your average white citizen. When folks of non-white races bring up racism, White folks immediately take it as an attack on them instead of taking the initiative to deal with an issue that is continuing to this day. Check out the Pine Ridge Rservation if you don't believe me. No matter what, when race comes to the national forefront, it is always turned around to be an issue of whiteness and White's fears of POSSIBLE DISCOMFORT in dealing with such an issue.

At KBOO, frustrated with the People of Color Caucus rarely meeting and only to insure parity of racial employment at the radio station, I started The People of Color Committee. The first three months were filled with dozens of attendees, white and non-white, who basically just came to insure that the committee wasn't being formed to attack whitey. When that was secure in their minds that I wasn't attacking whitey with this committee, EVERYONE STOPPED COMING.

What I wanted to do with this committee was not only to address issues of race and racism as they arose within the station, but to create a unity amongst all races, have a common and safe place to meet and share our cultures and understandings with one another, to create programming around this issue, etc. Nope! Folks didn't want that. They just wanted to insure that whitey's interests were not being DISCOMFORTED.

This presidential campaign stood on the threshold of doorways of ugliness that need to be looked into by this nation as a whole. Not just racism, but misogyny, poverty, dis-education, massive human rights violations WITHIN THIS NATION, etc., but it won't. You see, that doesn't serve the interests of "the system." That would serve the interests of the people, who may then organize and actually REVOLT when they see the lies that have spilled forth from the most detestable and genocidal nation ever to have existed.

And, as far as the two towers comments by Wright, he was right there, too. Ward Churchill put it best in his essay "On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," the one that Bill O'Reilly took two years to read and then misquoted to get shit heaped on Ward. Ward also states it in his lectures. I paraphrase: People are tired of seeing their babies being killed by U.S. policy. They are fighting back. If the U.S. stops killing other peoples babies [as well as babies here, living ones that is, anti-abortion folks, you know, the ones you don't give a shit about], then the terrorism will undoubtedly stop.

He also quotes Madeline Albright (also a member of racist and genocidal Hillary campaign) that 5,000 dead Iraqi children every month due DIRECTLY to U.S. sanctions forced upon Iraq was an acceptable loss.

Damn fucking straight U.S. foreign policy IS RESPONSIBLE for the attacks that brought down the two towers. By the way, has anyone ever answered the question as to why 6 of the 19 terrorists were still alive and in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, I believe), after they committed suicide attacks in New York?

Bitter

Today...I'm a little bitter.

I don't mean to be, and I probably shouldn't, but I just got to thinking about an e-mail I received yesterday.

An employee from the Natve American Youth Association had heard through a friend of mine that I was leaving KBOO's radio show, "Mitakuye Oyasin." She was wondering if David Liberty would be interested in working with a few of their employees who are interested in doing radio. I informed her that David would probably be very interested in this and replied as much to both her and David.

But, you know what, I have tried for YEARS to get folks from NAYA to get involved in radio and television. I actively recruited them. I e-mailed. I made phone calls. I got tired of trying because I received absolutely ZERO responses. **sigh**

Now that my loud fucking ass is making way for others, they are more than happy to join in on the fun.

I shouldn't be a Bitter Ass about this, but I am. I am also happy they are actually going to work with David, even though for years they wouldn't even respond to my requests. At least they are doing it now.

I also think of when Shusli and I went to their school and tried to get them to be interested in hosting "Blackfire" a Dine punk band, back in November. Nope! Not interested. They don't want a band like that bringing "the wrong element" to their students. Oddly, a few years before when they were still located on Mississippi, Blackfire did a fund raiser for them. I know I shouldn't be bitter, but I just have to air these things before I move on.

I am seriously happy that these folks are FINALLY actually intrerested in doing radio NOW THAT I'M LEAVING! I am also pissed off and hurt because it took my leaving to finally get some folks seriously interested. I guess they didn't want to work with me. I guess they were just waiting for me to leave.

I knew that if I left, folks would actually start getting interested in media. This, however, hurts as well as makes me happy.

CRASH BANG BOOM! Some more!

Things aren't looking too good, folks. Last year, Bear Sterams was worth $20 billion, last week it sold for $270 million.

All the big wigs are worried about the economy, and well they should be. The Fed reduced interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to keep folks from runnin on the banks. Ask a depression era old person what a run on a bank looks like. Imagine all the fucking rich folk right beside the poor.

This current move by the fed is the proverbial finger in the dyke, as it were, and pressure is building. I suggest you all keep your nose in Wall St.'s buisness, keep yourselves prepared, and get with your community.

Folks get paid well to delay this thing. But that is all they are doing now, delaying the inevitable.

Prelude to Portland Photos

I've been in this town [Portland, Oregon] for some 43 of my 44 years of life.

For over a year Shusli and I have been talking about moving to Coos Bay, Oregon, where we were both born, and where she lived many years of her life. A month or so after we first started discussing this possibility, I told Shusli that I had the feeling that this civilization is going to collapse. I believe I put it to her that we are on a point of no return and this civilization is going to come to an end. I felt like there was a point in time that the U.S. cannot even be saved by a Revolution. It has sealed its fate. Shusli informed me that she had been feeling the same thing.

This, in no small part, has influenced our decision to return to the place of our births, smack in between her homeland and my homeland. We know we are supposed to go home, but not sure YET what we are to do once we get there. We believe that this too, will make itself more clear as we motivate ourselves back onto our landbase to bear the weather of mass change we all know is coming. We plan on building community and doing whatever it takes to insure the survival of our peoples.

We met a couple passing through on a journey named Iokepa and Inette. Being Hawaiian, they are talking about folks taking the journey home. This does not necessarily mean that the whites will go back to Europe etc., it means we have to find the homes within our hearts and where our landbase is and secure ourselves for the bumpy ride to come.

Though I've been here for 43 years, Portland has never really seemed like my home as much as it is a place where I live. The Umpqua and Rogue Rivers are my home.

When I was one, we first moved to Raleigh Hills. Then we lived in two homes in Portland, one off of Deleware St., the other off of 8th. At the age of 7, we moved to Aloha, a suburb of Portland. Here I lived until I was 21 when my mother kicked me out for not pay $275 a month when her mortgage was only $215 at the time and this after she moved in her future husband. I told her I'd pay $100 bucks a month and nothing more. She gave me written notice to be out of her house in a month (the greedy fucking bitch).

Since, I have lived all over Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties. Looking back, never, at anytime, have I truly felt like I belonged here.

In a desire to help my people and all Indian people, I got involved in KBOO radio. I have been doing this some 12 years now, a bi-monthly native program called "Mitakuye Oyasin." Thursday the 27th of this month will be my "Good-Bye" show. I do not feel bad about this. I knew this day would come, and at times in the last 12 years, have looked forward to it. I have had a couple of friends tell me that they will no longer have a reason to listen to KBOO, but the show will still be there under the command of David Liberty. It is a good time to leave.

I have been involved in the Metro East TV program, "Native Nations," for the last 5 or 6 years. Thursday the 20th will be my last day for that show. I will not feel bad about leaving this, either, as it too is in the capable hands of David, and this show pretty much has been for a couple of years now. My favorite show of all of these was one where all of my guests cancelled on me (one calling me just 1 hour ahead of time). I just sat down in front of the camera and told folks the truth as best as I know it and encouraged all folks to do what they can to change the world.

As I release my canoe from these things and get ready to head down the river to the ocean to the South where I belong with my wonderful wife, Shusli, I decided it would be a good day to visit my Burnside Bridge one more time while I still live in this town.
