Thursday, Shusli and I went to pay rent at the rental agency. We decided to celebrate paying rent and my acceptance into the CNA class with a little trip to the DQ and share a peanutbuster parfait. There, Shusli happened upon a flyer for a local bookstore. Some of the books were rather progressive so the place peaked our interest. We went by, talked to the owner, Jerry, a little bit, saw that it was really quite the interesting place, and noticed there was a poetry reading and open mic the next day, Friday, which peaked our interest. We decided to bring some of our poetry and read at the open mic.
Friday, we pop in, not exactly knowing what to expect. The featured poet, Candice Favilla, a teacher at SWOCC, read some pretty powerful political poetry. Throughout her 15 minutes, Shusli and I were shocked that such folks existed in Coos Bay. We kept looking at each other and high fiving as we realized we were not alone.
Doro, photo shown above, read a poem that was a letter to a cousin of her that was killed in the Vietnam war. Shusli cried, and me, who usually always cries at such powerful things, managed to hold it in...and I regretted my decision to do so.
We heard some amazing poetry around the room. Another man last name London talked of his childhood in Saudi Arabia where he was greeted at the age of five by "heads like jack-o-lanterns" on pikes in the city. That is actual peoples heads.
Shusli read her poem "Once Upon a Time" which is a really powerful poem about GETTING IT ALL BACK.
I read "God" and a few short poems.
Mary, and elder woman, read some great poems about early 20th century justice that Shusli found very inspiring.
We hung out and talked with the folks for a while, then headed home with joy in our hearts knowing we aren't the only ones.
We received a call that I had left my camera at Colette's.
Saturday, Shusli and I shared a romantic morning taking a CPR course together, then we went to Colette's to pick up the camera and share a desert and some coffee. Two cups of coffee, clam chowder, and a cinnamon roll later...along with two hours of our time rolled right on by. Jessica, Jerry, Shusli and I (especially Shusli and Jessica), are planning our parts in the Revolution here in Coos bay. FUCKIN' AWESOME.
So, when passing through Coos Bay, visit "Colette's" before looking us up and say hello to Jerry and Jessica and feel encouraged in creating Revolution:

What a great weekend it has been, and we are looking forward to changing the world from our new home here in Coos Bay. Coos Bay is turning out to be quite the fascinating and interesting little town.
