I wanted to let you all know about a magazine called "Colorlines." It has been out for 9 years now and I just got my first copy last night at New Seasons Yuppy Chow Mart. I've only read a little of it thus far, but it is indeed very interesting.
I'm currently read an article by Camilo Mejia called "My Road Out of Iraq." He also wrote a book that this article is take from called, "The Road from Ar Ramadi: The Private Rebellion of Staff Seargeant Camilo Mehia" (New York Press). It is about his observations of racism in Iraq and how it is RAMPANT amongst the troops whom we are told to support. "Our troops" do not consider Iraqi's to be human beings and treat them accordingly. When folks like Camilo try to help these folks, "Our Troops" harass them heavily. Right on! "Our Troops" are a bunch of racist mother-fucking pieces of shit, and we are supposed to support that. Not me, man.
There are many, like Camilo, who will stand up from time to time and struggle against the racism within the ranks of "Our Troops." "Our Troops" will, like stated previously, harass those with a humanitarian bent heavily. People like Camilo are brave human beings. They fight to survive in the field, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, the struggle to maintain their humanity in doing so.
This seems to be a very excellent magazine, and I'm sorry I missed it all these years.
